Summary
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone – regardless of age, income, or background – has the opportunity to learn and grow. The Y is the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Youth Programs

  • Kids Night Out This event is for all children ages 6–12 to enjoy an evening packed with excitement. The night begins with a tasty dinner, followed by a variety of staff-led games, and ends with a fun ‘free swim’ session in the pool. (Available to Members and Non-Members- offered monthly)

  • Teens Night Out This is a night where no adults are allowed! The building will be open exclusively to teens ages 13–17. Teens can take over the space—hang out, shoot hoops, hit the gym, work out, swim, or chill by the pool. There will be music, food and snacks, great vibes, and good times. Best of all, the event is free for all community members. (Available to Members and Non-Members- offered monthly)

  • Youth Sports Our sports programs are open to all children ages 5–15. The focus is on teaching and strengthening the fundamental skills needed for each sport. Participants will also develop teamwork, leadership, and good sportsmanship while learning how to play and grow in their abilities.

  • Preschool This program is for children ages 2.9–5 years old. Our EEC-licensed preschool operates year-round, Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. We offer weekly swimming lessons, free breakfast, lunch, and snacks, as well as engaging indoor and outdoor play spaces.

  • After-School Program This program provides after-school childcare for children in grades K through age 12. Students are picked up from New Bedford Public Schools and transported to the Y each day for swimming, gym or outdoor play, homework help, games, activities, and a healthy snack. The Y also operates an after-school program at Carney Academy. Both programs run until 5:30 pm daily, and from 7:30am –5:30 pm on school closures, vacations, and snow days. Families enrolled five days per week receive a year-round family membership. (Please note: Transportation is not available from all schools—contact the Y for details.)

  • Summer Camp This program offers a summer camp experience for children in grades K through age 12, right in Downtown New Bedford. This non-traditional camp features swimming, arts and crafts, project-based learning, gaga ball, indoor and outdoor play, indoor archery, and field trips twice a week. The camp operates Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm

  • Swim Lessons Swim lessons begin at 6 months old and progress by skill level—from swim starters, to basics, and then to stroke development. Swimmers will not only learn essential water skills, but also build confidence, trust, and the ability to take healthy risks in a safe and supportive environment.
