Playworks New England

Our Mission

To improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.

Every kid loves to play. Playworks focuses on this intrinsic desire as an entry point to increase physical activity while simultaneously teaching social emotional skills. We show educators how to use playtime and recess as a learning opportunity to model and teach fundamental skills that children need to succeed. In New Bedford, during 2022-2023, Playworks is partnering with 19 elementary schools across New Bedford in a variety of ways. 4 elementary schools are partnering through the year-long Team Up Consultative Program, 7 schools are receiving a week-long Recess Reboot intensive, and the remaining schools are receiving professional development training for teachers or weekly curated content to assist educators and families in bringing play to every child’s day.

Playworks New England partners with New Bedford Public Schools to bring safe and healthy play opportunities to all elementary schools across the city. Elementary school staff work with site coordinators and/or participate in professional development around incorporating safe play in the school day.  In addition, some educators have access to Keep Playing, a service that curates weekly recess-ready games, brain breaks and related content to share across school buildings and out to families.  The combination of these resources serves to empower kids to play and get active, no matter the classroom setting.

All programs are free of charge to the students who participate.
