Playworks New England

Our Mission

To improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.

Every kid loves to play. Playworks focuses on this intrinsic desire as an entry point to increase physical activity while simultaneously teaching social emotional skills. We show educators how to use recess as a learning opportunity to model and teach fundamental skills that children need to succeed. In New Bedford, during 2019-2020, Playworks will serve 8 schools every day, reaching over 2,500 students through our TeamUp programming. We will impact another 1,600 students through our professional development training with 5 additional partner schools.

Playworks New England partners with New Bedford Public Schools to bring our TeamUp programming to eight elementary schools across the city. Through onsite consultative support, we help schools rethink recess to create a recess experience that is safe, inclusive, and fun for all students, every day. Additionally, within each school our trained Site Coordinators facilitate a Junior Coach Leadership Program, a youth leadership program that trains 4th and 5th graders to supports recess and make a positive impact at their school. Junior Coaches participate in team building activities and games to learn about conflict resolution, leadership, and recess game facilitation. This program is available to students enrolled at our NBPS Partner Schools.
