3rd EyE Youth Empowerment
3rd EyE was founded in 1998 by three New Bedford youth looking to do something positive and creative in their community. 20+ years later, the driving force of this all-volunteer organization continues to be youth and young adults who are interested in developing skills in leadership and community building. Opportunities include experience in music and video production, mentoring, networking, organizing, event planning, and community outreach.
3rd Eye Youth Empowerment engages, unites, and activates the community through hip hop culture and mentorship to become transformative leaders.
3rd EyE Youth Empowerment provides a rolling opportunity for older youth and
young adults (15-24) to develop leadership skills via the development of community events.
These events include (but are not limited to):
The 3rd EyE Open: An annual hiphop festival which takes place in downtown New Bedford and includes 3 stages of live music, a kids' carnival, dance exhibitions and battles, street art creation, a basketball tournament and a variety of community programmers.
3rd EyE Pride & Your New Bedford: Monthly (virtual during Covid) showcases celebrating creativity and community. Happening monthly (February-November), 3EPride features music and dance performances, live art, micro-workshops, community conversations, hands-on activities and more.
Hip-Hop Pop-Ups & Dance Jams: Mini versions of the Open that happen at community centers (e.g. Dennison Memorial and the Boys and Girls Club), parks, beaches and community events (e.g. AHA!, Hatch Street Open Studios, Reggae on West Beach).
Doodles Creative Sessions: 'Creative chaos' pop-up events for 5-11 year olds.
Coming in 2021:
The Communal Space: A cultural multi-purpose community space and modern art gallery. The Communal Space represents a diverse and equitable co-working and creative environment for multi-cultural communities in the historic downtown of New Bedford, MA.
Youth Workshops: The W.O.A.H. Workshop focuses on empowerment through writing. The New Deadford Survivor Series teaches story development and character drawing through the lens of the New Deadford graphic novel.
